Bring a blanket and enjoy this hands‐on children’s entertainment that grown‐ups can actually enjoy. A dynamic group, the Toe Jam Puppet Band has a unique combination of original songs, masterful shadow puppetry, storytelling and just plain old good fun! $5 suggested donation.
Nature Walks with Dr. Bob
It’s more likely you can count the few breaks between questions, than the number of times your child has pressed you for answers. Well, Dr. Bob of Casey Farm is armed with experience and prepared for the onslaught. Bring on the “what is that bird?” and “what wild animals live beyond those trees?” Go ahead and wonder “what marine life swims just offshore?” or “are those mushrooms poisonous?” Let your kids ask to their heart’s content during this hour-long walk through the fields, woodlands, and coastline of Casey Farm.
Admission: $6; walks occur on Sept. 17 & 24; Oct. 8
Coggeshall’s 43rd Annual Harvest Fair
Two full days of old-fashioned fun and games, with live music, yummy food, games, fun crafts, hay rides, pony rides, and much more. Against the backdrop of a working 18th century living history farm, visitors of all ages can try their hand at more than a dozen competitions (inspired from the 18th-century!) including corn shucking, sack races, and French & English (better known as tug-of-war).
On Saturday, award-winning duo, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly, will perform traditional American and Celtic folk songs and percussive dance. Sunday’s performers will include Ladies of the Rolling Pin, who have been performing since 1988 and is one of the few all female Morris dance troupes (see more about this amazing group in Providence Monthly)
Grab some quintessential Rhode Island treats provided by a variety of food vendors, including CC’s Sweet Potatoes and Del’s Lemonade, along with Coggeshall Farm’s own famous jonnycakes. And if your idea of “competition” includes eating, there’s a Harvest Fair Bake Off you can enter for just $5. This year’s theme is pumpkin pie and a cash prize will be awarded to the victors at 3 p.m. each day.
Admission: Entrance to Harvest Fair is $7 for adults; $5 for children 4-11, seniors, and active military; free for children under 4 and Coggeshall members. The entrance fee includes games, competitions, performances and selected craft activities. Additional activities include pony rides ($6), hay rides ($2) and specialty crafts ($2-$5).
Paine House Heritage Day
Coventry is a secret pocket of Rhode Island history, and the past gets a lively jolt at Paine House Museum’s 7th Annual Heritage Day with music performances by the Providence Brigade Band and demonstrations by the Rhode Island Spinners Guild. Take a free tour of Paine house (ca. 1691), try out candle dipping, weaving, butter making, pumpkin painting and other crafts. Have your kids try the “fast-food of olden times,” with old-fashioned hot dogs, johnny cakes, popcorn, Birch beer, sarsaparilla, and cider.
Lincoln’s Great Road Day
A great day indeed―with six different museum sites open and free admission for families to tour at their own pace―you can’t go wrong with so much to explore in one fantastically historic place! Taking place during late September when leaves start to change their colors, a day trip along this route is sure to be beautiful. The historic homes, farms, and mills create a rolling landscape along the Great Road Historic District, which retains much of the Blackstone Valley’s early 19th-century rural character.
There is parking at each site with the exception of the Moffett Mill, which is accessible only by shuttle bus from Hearthside House.
Hearthside, Arnold House, and Hannaway Blacksmith Shop & Chase Farm Park are participating Rhody Ramble sites. Check out overviews of all the Great Road sites. Select the places you want to see, or visit all!
Smith’s Castle’s Harvest Festival
Where four centuries of Rhode Island history are preserved and interpreted―there is also much celebration! At this two-day festival, enjoy fall’s bounty, play games, dance and enjoy music from folk-rock duo Duck & Run on Saturday, and piano virtuoso and entertainer Jack Picard on Sunday. “Selfies” can be taken in the colonial photo booth, Uncle Sam will be in full regalia, and Smith Castle’s famous homemade apple crisp will be the cherry on top.
Admission: $8 adults; $4 children age 6 to 12; under 6 free; $25 family cap; discount for active military and seniors.
Traditional New England SCARES!

The Great Pumpkin Hunt
Blithewold is offering a unique way to pick out your pumpkin this year! Participate in a search for hidden pumpkins around the estate grounds, and then take one home to carve! After the hunt, enjoy music and hot cider; order some snacks from on-site food trucks, and listen to (and join in on!) a discussion about constellations in the night sky during a special “star program” around a bonfire.
Registration required. Member $15; includes pumpkin. Non-member $18; includes pumpkin. Participant $8; does not include pumpkin.
Annual Cider Social
The annual Cider Social is a festive gathering for adults and children, alike! Children will enjoy the yummy cider and donuts, a candy haystack, and corn husk-doll making, while adults will delight in a local vendor showcase and booths sellling vintage and antique items donated by the community. Everyone can take free tours of Wilbor House and have the opportunity to play Cow Pie Bingo, as well as see this year’s special exhibition, “If Jane Should Want to Be Sold, Stories of Slavery, Indenture and Freedom in Little Compton, Rhode Island.”
The highlight of the day will be the Cow Pie Bingo event taking place between 3 and 4pm. A cow will be led onto a gridded field promptly at 3 PM and the first square in the grid to “receive” a cow pie will be the winner. The holder of the winning ticket will receive a $500 prize. If no cow pie is “deposited” before 4pm, the judges will draw the winning ticket from a hat.
Spooktacular Storytime in Downtown Providence
Kidinfo’s Storytime is back to haunt Burnside Park with a “spooktacular” event for all ages. A great family-friendly, not-so-scary event, featuring spooky and funny stories, and tons of fall fun! Guest authors, illustrators and performers will read and perform their own works. Our artists in residence, co-founder Alison Paul and Ricky Katowicz transform the park with art, and “Haunted Art in the Park” kids create work inspired by the pages of a Halloween-themed book. Enjoy a Halloween-y dance party + costume parade, a hay bale maze to explore, mini pumpkins to adorn, and crisp apples to crunch from our local farmers.
Kids in costumes get a treat! But if you don’t have one, you can make one there!
