Mad Mike’s “Meteorite or Meteor-Wrong”
3-2-1 Blast off into space! Family fun activities, demonstrations and more when you visit the Roger Williams Museum of Natural History & Planetarium during April school vacation. Each day during the afternoon, bring your kids for some hands-on adventure at “Mad Mike’s.” Kids can hold a space rock in their hands, learn all about meteorites, and compare the characteristics of space rocks and Earth rocks. Admission: Free with museum admission ($2). From April 17 through April 21; 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. everyday.
Take a walk on the wild side
See where scoundrels lived, pirates profited and criminals were punished on an engaging stroll through historic streets with Newport History Walking Tours. These family-friendly excursions work for those with little ones in strollers as well as older kids curious about dastardly deeds of the city’s early residents. Discover why this colony was known as “Rogue’s Island” during the engaging Rogues & Scoundrels tour. Admission: $15 per person; $10 for Newport Historical Society members. Family Movie Night: The Wizard of Oz
Follow the yellow brick road to the Children’s Library at the Providence Anthenaeum, and take your family on an adventure with Dorothy, Toto, and the rest of the gang in this technicolor classic! Enjoy pizza, juice boxes, and an ice cream treat! $5 snack fee (adults are free). Film rating [G], running time 102 min. Ages 5+ with parent or caregiver. Registration is required. Enchanted Fairy Fun
Find whimsical fairies and imaginative fun in the intricate fairy house creations on display at Blithewold Mansion. Explore the garden and find fairy houses made from natural materials like leaves, moss, stone. On Saturday, see performances by Fairy Queen, Mary King, and Ladies of the Rolling Pin, and make fairy crafts. On Sunday, make a special fairy flower crown with Mom and enjoy a special appearance by The Bubble Guy! On both days, visitors can enjoy yummy treats from Castaway Gourmet Food Truck. It’s time for tea at Hearthside House!
Is your family captivated by splendor and lush past of the television sensation Downton Abbey? Experience the elegance of an historical afternoon tea, perfect for a Mother’s Day celebration at Hearthside House. Little Pumpkins Halloween Party
Calling all little pumpkins to one of the most beautiful buildings of all! It’s that time again! Dress in your Halloween finest and join the fun with Lindsay Meehan from Music for Children as she gets us all up and dancing to her enchanting tunes. Light refreshments will be served. Free & open to the public. Ages 3+ (younger siblings welcome). In order to provide refreshments for all, registration is recommended. Christmas at the Newport Mansions
The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you at 3 magnificent mansions decked out in Yuletide finery. The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House–three National Historic Landmarks and icons of the Gilded Age in America–are filled with thousands of poinsettias, fresh flowers, evergreens and wreaths. Thirty decorated Christmas trees reflecting individual room decor anchor many of the magnificent spaces. Dining tables set with period silver and china complete the elegant setting. Windows of each mansion are lit with individual white candles, in keeping with the colonial tradition. New for 2017, a gingerbread model of each house, created by amazing local pastry chefs, will be on display in its kitchen.
All three houses will be decorated and open daily for tours through Monday, January 1, 2018. The Breakers opens daily at 9 a.m., The Elms and Marble House open at 10 a.m. The last tour admission at all three houses is at 4 p.m., and the houses & grounds close at 5 p.m.
Admission for Adults is $24 at The Breakers and $17.50 at The Elms or Marble House. Youth 6-17 are $8 at each house. Children under 6 are always free. A special Winter Passport ticket providing daytime admission to all 3 houses is $30 Adults, $10 Youth 6-17 & Free for Children under 6.
Christmas at Historic Linden Place Mansion
Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00-5:00 & Sunday 12:00-5:00
A towering Christmas tree framed by a four-story spiral staircase, elegant decorations on every mantle and in every nook and cranny and Christmas tablescapes by top designers and florists…these are just a few of the many delights that await you this season at Linden Place Mansion. The elegant décor throughout the mansion that you will marvel at is the work of professional designers and styles range from the classical to whimsical. The mansion’s parlors, bedrooms, and magnificent chapel-like Gothic room are magnificently transformed for your enjoyment and inspiration.
Admission is $10, $8 for seniors and students and free for children under 12.
Afternoon Tea in the Dining Room
Afternoon Tea is served Tuesday – Friday from November 24th – December 29th. There are two seatings at 1:00 pm & 3:00 pm.
The Dining Room at Blithewold has always been a place where fine meals have been served to cherished guests. Today, friends gather and exchange stories while delighting in a cup of tea, freshly baked scones with sweet cream, and a 3-tiered tray filled with sweet and savory treats. The price for Tea includes admission to the Mansion and Grounds, so be sure to leave time for touring!
Reservations required. Tea is $32 per person ($24 for Blithewold Members)
Holiday Lantern Tour
Fridays & Saturdays at 4:00 pm
Hear the history of early American holiday traditions on an evening walk. Learn how Newporters did — or didn’t — observe the holidays. Reservations encouraged as space is limited, 401-841-8770. Purchase tickets and depart from The Museum of Newport History and Shop.
Tour Fee: $15 per person, $10 for Society members and active duty military with ID. Add $5 to your ticket for a keepsake lantern!
