Lanterns & Legends
Tour-goers for this excursion will hear about some of South County’s creepiest history, including brazen murders, gruesome executions, and supposed vampires, all in the hallowed halls of the Old Washington County Jail. The tour highlights grim artifacts from the collection that are not usually on display. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for Center members and students (including college). Tickets must be purchased prior to the event. Tours will be also be offered on October 20th, 21st, and 27th at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Space is limited, and tours quickly sell out each year.

Christmas at the Newport Mansions
The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you at 3 magnificent mansions decked out in Yuletide finery. The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House–three National Historic Landmarks and icons of the Gilded Age in America–are filled with thousands of poinsettias, fresh flowers, evergreens and wreaths. Thirty decorated Christmas trees reflecting individual room decor anchor many of the magnificent spaces. Dining tables set with period silver and china complete the elegant setting. Windows of each mansion are lit with individual white candles, in keeping with the colonial tradition. New for 2017, a gingerbread model of each house, created by amazing local pastry chefs, will be on display in its kitchen.
All three houses will be decorated and open daily for tours through Monday, January 1, 2018. The Breakers opens daily at 9 a.m., The Elms and Marble House open at 10 a.m. The last tour admission at all three houses is at 4 p.m., and the houses & grounds close at 5 p.m.
Admission for Adults is $24 at The Breakers and $17.50 at The Elms or Marble House. Youth 6-17 are $8 at each house. Children under 6 are always free. A special Winter Passport ticket providing daytime admission to all 3 houses is $30 Adults, $10 Youth 6-17 & Free for Children under 6.
Christmas at Historic Linden Place Mansion
Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00-5:00 & Sunday 12:00-5:00
A towering Christmas tree framed by a four-story spiral staircase, elegant decorations on every mantle and in every nook and cranny and Christmas tablescapes by top designers and florists…these are just a few of the many delights that await you this season at Linden Place Mansion. The elegant décor throughout the mansion that you will marvel at is the work of professional designers and styles range from the classical to whimsical. The mansion’s parlors, bedrooms, and magnificent chapel-like Gothic room are magnificently transformed for your enjoyment and inspiration.
Admission is $10, $8 for seniors and students and free for children under 12.
Afternoon Tea in the Dining Room
Afternoon Tea is served Tuesday – Friday from November 24th – December 29th. There are two seatings at 1:00 pm & 3:00 pm.
The Dining Room at Blithewold has always been a place where fine meals have been served to cherished guests. Today, friends gather and exchange stories while delighting in a cup of tea, freshly baked scones with sweet cream, and a 3-tiered tray filled with sweet and savory treats. The price for Tea includes admission to the Mansion and Grounds, so be sure to leave time for touring!
Reservations required. Tea is $32 per person ($24 for Blithewold Members)
Holiday Lantern Tour
Fridays & Saturdays at 4:00 pm
Hear the history of early American holiday traditions on an evening walk. Learn how Newporters did — or didn’t — observe the holidays. Reservations encouraged as space is limited, 401-841-8770. Purchase tickets and depart from The Museum of Newport History and Shop.
Tour Fee: $15 per person, $10 for Society members and active duty military with ID. Add $5 to your ticket for a keepsake lantern!
Sparkle! An Outdoor Family Event

Enjoy Blithewold’s marshmallow-roasting-Christmas-carol-singing-cocoa-sipping-strolling-through-the-twinkling-garden-paths-fun-for-the-whole-family event! Free Hot Cocoa! S’mores kits are 1 for $2, and 3 for $5 (a part of the proceeds benefits the Boy Scouts) Carol-singing around the fire performances at 6 and 7 pm. The gardens and house are fragile and can suffer from too many visitors. So, there are timed entrances at 5 pm, 6 pm and 7 pm. Pre-registration is required.

Concerts are included with regular admission $15 Adults, $6 Youth 6-17, $32 Family (2 adults, 2 youths). Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Reserved seats can be held for an additional $2 fee.
Holiday Open House
Start the season with the Newport Historical Society’s annual Holiday Open House. Visit the 1739 Colony House on Washington Square Tour and hear hymns performed by costumed interpreters that were once sung in colonial Newport. A handout with lyrics will be provided, audience participation is encouraged. Admission is free, donations are welcome. Christmas in Newport’s official opening and tree lighting ceremony in Washington Square follows.

Get into the holiday cheer the 1790’s way at “Christmas at Coggeshall!” Enjoy hot apple cider, authentic Christmas cookies from 1796, crafts, caroling, games, and shopping. Add some holiday spirit to your home by purchasing your Christmas tree at Coggeshall. Our gift shop is stocked with our own maple syrup and honey, historic games, toys, and our brand new magnets and T-shirts.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under, seniors, and active military, and free for kids under 4.
